Nigel Stepney 1958-2014

Allinsport was sad to learn the news of Nigel Stepney’s passing last Friday in a road accident. Having known Nigel from the time he joined Lotus in 1980 and lived and worked with him on a number of occasions, Allinsport felt it important that Nigel receives full praise for his instinctive engineering brilliance, which was instrumental in many many Grand Prix victories, and should not be diminished by the political machinations which clouded the reputation of a racing genius. Nigel’s commitment to doing a perfect job did not always endear him to his fellow workers, but his success record across multiple teams and disciplines are the living evidence of his brilliance. Nigel’s qualities in leading the preparation of successful cars was unequaled. He will be deeply missed by those who fully appreciate the subtle difference between assembling components and engineering to win, as well as his family and many friends.
